Top 7 Things To Look Out For In An Electrician
Let’s face it - getting an electrician to do some work in your home can be tricky enough. Finding the electrician itself can be hard enough at times. But once you find one, be it from a recommendation or online, how do you know if you can rely on him?
If it’s only a small job are they going to want to do it? Or will they just never get back to you? And more importantly how easy will they be to deal with? And will they do a good job?
That’s why we’ve listed out the top 7 things you can look out for when dealing with an electrician. These are the things that we strive for ourselves.
How They Speak?
This is when you are speaking to them on the phone and making that first impression. How do they come across when they speak to you? Do they come across as friendly, professional and eager to help? Or are they trying to get off the phone as quickly as possible? You know what they say about first impressions lasting…
2. A Good Reputation
The easiest way to find out what an electrician is like is to get an idea from past customers. Maybe the electrician in question did some work for someone you know. You can ask them about how the job went and what the process was like. It might be worthwhile even asking people you know have they heard of him. You never know what you might find.
Another way to check this out is to look them up online see if they have any Google reviews. If they have very little reviews with some negative ones thrown in there then this is a red flag. If you want a good idea of what this should look like then check out our Google page here.
3. Knowledgeable
Electrical work is something that can be very technical and should only be carried out by a competent person. This is why it’s important for you to make sure that your electrician knows what they are doing and what they are talking about. The easiest way to do this is by asking various questions about the job, regulations etc.
Obviously it can be hard to judge this as you ultimately don’t know what he/she is talking about and will never know any different. But a good sign will be just simply how much detail they go into with their answers and how simple they can make it for you to understand.
4. Examples Of Work
Ultimately the one thing that most people want from a job carried out is that it is left with a neat, tidy finish and looks like it was done by a professional. After all, that is in part what you’re paying for.
Nowadays with the power of social media you should be able to simply check their facebook/instagram to see if they have any examples of similar jobs on there. Failing that, the electrician should be able to show you photos from his phone/a brochure of his work.
5. Neat & Tidy
As mentioned in the last point, ultimately people want a neat, tidy finish to the job. They also want their home left neat and tidy when the electrician walks out the door. No one wants a big mess of cut cables, plaster/brick dust, rubbish left behind to be cleaned up.
The easiest way you can decide this is by how presentable the electrician is when he comes to look at the job. Is he looking neat and tidy? Or if it’s in the evening after one of his jobs does he at least look somewhat presentable? What sort of condition does he leave his van in? Little things like this can be clear signs of what to expect.
6. Reliability
After the neat, tidy finish one of the most important things people look for in an electrician is how reliable they truly are. People only want to deal with someone who is a man/woman of their word. So if they promise the world are they going to follow through with it?
You will get a gauge for this when they come to look at the job. If they tell you when to expect the quote, what information they’ll provide you with it and what exactly to expect and they follow through then this is normally a good sign of how reliable they are.
7. Punctuality
Not only do people want someone who does the things they say they’ll do, they also want someone who shows up when they say they will!
Of course things could pop up for the electrician that throws them off. But if the electrician tells you they will be there Wednesday 7pm to look at the job and they show up 7pm on the money then this is a good sign that the electrician is in full control of their business and will treat your time with the respect it deserves.
After reading this article you should have a good idea what to look out for in an electrician. As we mentioned, these are the things that we always strive for when dealing with new enquiries. So if you’re looking for some electrical work done feel free to get in touch for a quote.
